🚨🚨CONGRESS SECRETLY TRYING TO SNEAK IN EARN IT ACT COPYCAT INTO MUST PASS SPENDING BILL (PLEASE READ EXTREMELY IMPORTANT)

July 20, 2023
Congress is right now determining what is included in a must pass spending bill the NDAA. Often congress will sneakily add as amendments their bills that they can’t pass in a normal setting.

If you remember, I made a previous post about EARN IT being reintroduced here.

The EARN IT Act and it’s copycats are bipartisan bills that will greatly censor if not completely eliminate encryption and anything sexual and LGBTQ+ from the internet, globally. Anything the far-right doesn’t like will be completely gone.
The best way to stop them is to use https://www.badinternetbills.com/ to call your senators.

Following it’s initial introduction earlier this year was massive opposition from human rights, LGBT, tech, political groups, and grassroots groups. Bc of this, the senators decided to remake the bill but give it a new name, so they can still pass Earn It without actually passing Earn It. Those bills are the Stop CSAM Act (yes really, they actually named it that), and the Cooper-Davis act.

The entire point of these bills is to mass surveil and censor everyone and I don’t know why more people or senators speak out against it. There is a direct timeline from when the Attorney General Barr (under Trump) said he wanted to do this to it’s initial introduction in 2019, and how the senators explicitly knew they couldn’t actually say that so they lied and said it was about “stopping CSAM” or “stopping drugs” for Cooper-Davis Act.

These bills essentially do the following:

  1. they gut encryption, the one thing actually protects you from having your data seen by anyone. Do you want republicans to know you’re trans? that someone had an abortion? that they spoke out against the govt? to see your private photos you have uploaded to the cloud? to see what porn you watch? if youre a journalist, or an abuse survivor, any hacker or abuser can see your stuff and track you.
  2. they gut parts of Section 230, the one thing that allows anyone to post online and birthed social media. Previous gutting into 230 gave us the tumblr nsfw ban and killed that site.
  3. they create an unelected commission with some already established govt body (DOJ, FTC, etc) that will include law enforcement and people from NCOSE or other Christian conservative groups who will decide what is and isn’t lawful to say. no citizen can vote who’s on this commission, and the president gets to pick. it’s like the supreme court, but for the internet.
  4. lead to mass censorship and surveillance because of the above

We have until the end of the month to stop this, but this can be added literally any moment until then. It’s literally code red. If this is added it goes into effect immediately. The BEST way to stop this is to drive calls and emails to the senate. https://www.badinternetbills.com/ connects you directly to your members of congress & gives you a call script.

It is ESSENTIAL to call the Senate leaders who can stop this. Here’s a more precise call script you can use: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1huD5Ldd1lPTECYTEb9Gg2ZzrqW6Y9tryHT-MdjOl8kY/edit

All these people expressed concern over Earn It, so we need to press them hard to not allow it’s copycats Cooper-Davis or Stop CSAM into the NDAA. This is URGENT and needs all hands on deck.
Chuck Schumer (D-NY) (202) 224-6542
Maria Cantwell (D-WA) (202) 224-3441
Jon Ossof (D-GA) (202)-224-3521
Alex Padilla (D-CA) (202) 224-3553
Cory Booker (D-NJ) (202) 224-3224
Mike Lee (R-UT) (202) 224-5444

Please please please spread this message and blow up their phones.

TLDR; The Senate is trying to quietly push the Earn It Act’s copycat bills into the must pass NDAA, which will lead to mass censorship and surveillance online by gutting Section 230 which is the entire reason you can even be on tumblr and why the internet exists, killing encryption which put everyone’s lives in danger, and appointing far-right people to a supreme court-esque commission that the president has direct control over. They could be added in ANY DAY and we need to push hard to stop it before it gets to that point. CALL YOUR SENATORS **NOW** BY USING https://www.badinternetbills.com/ AND CALL THE SENATE LEADERSHIP AND SPREAD THE WORD!!!!

“KOSA wont pass, it got rejected the last two times!”

It wasn’t passed because people spoke out against it. People called and emailed their senators. So, CALL / EMAIL YOUR SENATORS. MAKE IT KNOWN THAT WE DO NOT WANT THIS BILL TO PASS!

“But its unconstitutional-“ There’ve been multiple bills passed before that are unconstitutional. This will not be any different to them, they do not care.

STOP KOSA!!!

KOSA made it out of committee, so now is the time to contact your senator and tell them to vote no on KOSA.

& if your rep is Dem: Remind them, please, that LGBTQ+ content - heck, SEX ED content - is considered obscene by the GOP membership, & maybe consider that keeping kids & teens from accessing either of these things is one reason your GOP colleagues are so eager to collaborate on this bill??

if your rep is GOP: Remind them that realistically, sites that host ‘adult’ content will likely have to collect & keep records of legal IDs, & data breaches happen *on the regular*? Do they know anybody who’s had their identity stolen? How excited are they for the day their *own* browsing habits are exposed by a data breach?

Remind them all that they might trust their opposite-party colleagues, but they *don’t* trust the opposite party any further than they could throw them, and think about every possible bad-faith interpretation of the bill before voting ‘yes’, for fuck’s sake??

I’m tired & deeply worried. The internet has been a relatively safe space for queer ppl the world over. If KOSA passes, it’s a big step towards waving goodbye to that world.

For everyone panicking, it has NOT become a law. It has passed its first round and has been put into a markup stage

For more information on who to contact and what exactly the process is for something to pass into law, go HERE^

OH OH I have a bit more info for this! I got this from a discord that I’m in, to give resources and to help folks with phone anxieties there’s a full resource sheet with numbers to call and scripts to follow. These bills have been stopped before and its SO SO important to keep the phones off the damn hooks

I can’t do all that much from Canada but I thought the wider audience of yall could use this resource, so spread if you can!!!

sexhaver:

Ben Drowned is hands-down one of the funniest creepypastas ever because like. it singlehandedly cemented the setup of “woah guys i found this N64 game at a garage sale and it’s HAUNTED!!!!” as a cliche. this guy named Jadusable kept posting videos showing his copy of Majora’s Mask with fucked up glitches, like Link being constantly on fire and screaming, or having his upper body rotated 90 degrees, or having NPCs say ominous shit to him, etc. you really need to watch the original video for the full experience (assuming you havent already), but if you haven’t, at least watch this one starting around 2:30:

so Jadusable posts the “final” update to his story and his forum account goes dark. in the canon of his creepypasta, he’s straight up dead (killed by the haunted game cartridge), and he seems to be sticking to it by not posting anything. theories ran wild - was it an elaborate scam? could it have all been true?

years later, on April 1st 2012, with no announcement or fanfare, Jadusable posts the following video, “king kong.wmv”, following the naming scheme of his previous videos. skip to 1:30ish.

when i tell you the people who took the creepypasta seriously for years were MAD mad

I’m curious as to where you all stand

SAG-AFTRA strike

I support it and will be boycotting all new movies/TV/streaming etc

I support it but will not be boycotting movies/TV/streaming etc

I don’t support it but will boycott movies/TV/streaming etc for other reasons

I don’t support it and won’t be boycotting anything

I don’t care about this

Reblog for demographics!

Has either union called for a boycott? Because boycotting can disrupt their plans and make negotiations harder unless they’re actively asking for one. I’m boycotting reality TV (which every studio is going to be pushing because it’s the only content they can make cheaply and without writers or professional actors) but nothing else unless we are asked to.

#i always understood that boycotts and strikes were sort of two opposing strategies#if a strike is happening you want demand to continue as normal because the point is to prove what would happen without your labor#a boycott is reducing demand and the point is usually in response to a practice that cant be solved by employees walking out#for instance a boycott might be ideal for protesting AI generated content (via @displacedlabrat)

This is correct. If anything, I want the execs to be terrified because the consumers are demanding more from them and they have nothing in their reserves to sell and no way of making anything else to sell.

Also “new” content is going to keep coming out for a while because it’s already been written and acted and edited. (I’d actually expect a lot of bad-but-finished movies that would normally never be released to get released once they start running out of the good stuff) There is less than no point to boycott anything right now.

1) Nobody in the unions has called for a boycott.

2) Boycotting takes away the residuals/initial payout due to the actors and writers right when they aren’t working.

3) Boycotting let’s the studios say “See? You aren’t valuable; nobody wants your labor” which is precisely the opposite of the message to be sent.

on a serious note regarding the wga strike and (as of 1:50 AM PST 7/13) upcoming sag-aftra strike, dsa-la has a fundraiser called The Snacklist which provides snacks and water on the picket lines here in LA. right now the funds they have will not last through the end of the summer, especially given the current and upcoming heatwaves necessitating more supplies. if you have a couple of dollars to spare it’s a great way to directly support the writers (and potentially the actors) during this difficult time!

happy first sag-aftra strike in 60 years to all who celebrate.

if you are an enjoyer of media (which i will guess based on your presence on tumblr that you are) please consider donating to the snacklist (linked above) or to any of the following mutual aid funds that directly support striking actors/writers, IATSE and teamster union members who are also out of work and by and large refusing to cross the picket lines, and nonunion PAs and assistants (like yours truly) who are directly impacted by the work stoppage. everyone in this industry works unbelievably hard to bring you the shows, movies, webseries, and variety programs that you enjoy and every worker deserves a fair contract. any support you can give is extremely meaningful.

The Entertainment Community Fund provides emergency financial assistance to anyone in the entertainment industry who is unable to pay their immediate basic living expenses such as housing, food, bills, and healthcare.

The Union Solidarity Coalition has been formed by members of the wga, sag, and the dga to help cover the cost of healthcare for IATSE and teamsters who will not get enough work hours to qualify for their coverage this year due to their refusal to cross a picket line.

The Hollywood Support Staff Relief Fund (also run by the Entertainment Community Fund but separate from the above link which supports all film and tv workers) offers assistance to tv and film support staff and assistants who are not protected by a union and have been displaced from low or entry level positions.

Drive 4 Solidarity is an IATSE organized event in August raising funds for all union and guild members. Tickets are available for those in socal but donations are being taken as well.

Humanitas Groceries for Writers fund provides WGA members with grocery gift cards.

Green Envelope Grocery is a grocery fund for all workers in the entertainment industry regardless of union status.

Ah, guys, just to be clear, I realize most of you probably know this but I’m seeing it framed….weirdly, so –

Tumblr is not $30M in debt. You can’t get Tumblr out of the red by giving them $30M. I mean you can, for a bit, but Tumblr is operating at a $30M deficit. That means yearly, Tumblr is spending $30M more than it earns

None of this is to say we can’t have a Crab Day and try to get that $30M covered, sounds like fun! But that just means Tumblr breaks even for the current fiscal year. Tumblr has investors that want profits (or, well, I guess it’s Automattic’s investors, but regardless they want profit), so in order for it to continue operation, it has to either become Genuinely Profitable Very Quickly, or it has to do a fundraising round of some kind and get even more investors on board, which is really just kicking the problem down the road a year or two.

And either way, the extremely slick and semi-alarming pitch Tumblr is making about all the changes it’s going to make to increase engagement and such is still going to be necessary, because that’s where the money is, unfortunately. I don’t like it either (my favorite bullet point from that pitch is that they will email people who have their notifications turned off, because sure, that sounds like it won’t annoy anyone who like me was already overly inclined to be annoyed) but like. Baby needs a new pair of shoelaces.

None of this is to be alarmist or anything, I just got a bit worried about all this talk of $30M in debt, because this is not a one-time deal.

Crab Day!!!

image

Where:

Here on Tumblr!!

What:

Buy crabs!

Why:

As we now know, Tumblr is $30 million dollars in debt. Oops. Tumblr has announced some major (and unpopular) changes to the site in their attempt to get back above water. The alternative is that Tumblr ceases to exist. But maybe we can change that…

How:

There are 327 million unique tumblr visits per month, and almost 500 million active accounts. If 10 million unique users (or less, if we bought more than one) bought or gifted Crabs from the Tumblr store, we could knock out Tumblr’s debt easily. Buy crabs!

When:

July 29, 2023 is Crab Day, running through August 5 (for anyone who can’t log on that day) as Crab Week!

Who:

Everyone!! If you truly can’t afford to participate with a $3 crab, (or other item from the shop) post crab memes!

Time for Tumblr users to rise again and surprise everyone…
